Plans for London 2012 Olympic Flame revealed

OlympicFlameThe London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has announced details of the lighting of the Olympic Flame and its arrival into the UK.

The Flame will be lit in Greece on 10 May and travel on board a special gold-liveried aircraft to Cornwall ahead of the Torch Relay, which starts on the 19 May.

IllnessAre you a STOIC? Or more of a Wickie? According to new research, the answer will depend on how your working practices are influenced by your health and by modern technology.

A report from Professor Cary Cooper and health insurance provider Ellipse suggests that technological advances have created an "always on" work culture. This, coupled with low job security, says the study, has heaped pressure upon workers. The study showed that 80% of employees continue to work when ill, with damaging effects on productivity and health.

Plans announced for London 2012 World Sport Day

WorldSportDaySchools and colleges across the UK are being encouraged to celebrate the athletes and cultures of the world as part of London 2012 World Sport Day, which will take place on Monday 25 June 2012.

The celebration, which will open National School Sport Week in England and Wales, will give thousands of young people across the UK the chance to learn about the athletes and cultures of the world.

Tweet Education Secretary, Michael Gove

In, what is believed to be, an unprecedented move, MPs are asking members of the public to submit questions, via Twitter, to put to Education Secretary, Michael Gove at the Education Select Committee meeting in the House of Commons next week.

The Education Committee will hold an oral evidence session on 31 January with Mr Gove and MPs on the Committee want to ensure that their questions reflect the most pressing concerns in the world of education and want to hear what questions the public would put to the Minister.

Plastic surgery should be regulated, say surgeons

plastic_surgeonsLeading plastic surgeons called for tighter regulation of the cosmetic surgery industry this week, deeming it to be an under-regulated “wild west”.

The surgeons are members of the British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), and perform cosmetic surgeries both in the NHS and at leading private hospitals.

Members of the association believed that adverts for cosmetic procedures, which feature in the tabloids and in women’s magazines, should be banned.

BAAPS president Fazal Fatah said, “Over the last decade the BAAPS has worked tirelessly to educate the public on the many aggressive marketing gimmicks that not only trivialise surgery but endanger the patient”.

“We have warned against the unrealistic expectations set by reality ‘makeover’ shows and against crass competition prizes promising ‘mummy makeovers’ and body overhauls.

‘Satisfactory’ label for schools to be scrapped announces OFSTED

Ahead of a government summit on ‘coasting schools’ held at Downing Street yesterday, Ofsted’s Chief Inspector, Sir Michael Wilshaw, confirmed his intention to scrap the ‘satisfactory’ judgment for school inspections.

The move is designed to tackle the number of coasting schools that have remained stubbornly ‘satisfactory’ over a number of inspections. The proposals mean that any school not providing a good standard of education will be given a new ‘requires improvement’ grade.
