With the Indian summer gradually coming to an end in the UK, Londoners will soon be looking for an alternative to lazy evenings in the park. Happily, help is at hand! The London Film Festival kicks off on October 12, and promises to be one of the most exciting events in the capital's calendar.
Now in its 55th year, the event is based at the headquarters of the British Film Institute, on London's south bank. This charming venue not only houses some of the UK's finest cinema screens, but also two bars, a restaurant, and a well-stocked shop - perfect for those looking for some distraction before a screening.
Naturally, the Festival attracts directors and visitors from around the world. This year, over 200 films will be shown in the fortnight-long celebration, meaning that there should be something to suit all tastes. The special Gala screenings for this edition of the event include the much anticipated We Need to Talk About Kevin, political drama The Ides of March, and the Madonna-directed (yes, indeed) W.E.
For the more practical, the London Film Festival also hosts a series of masterclasses and talks, delivered by some of the industry's most respected individuals. This year, the main draw is likely to be prolific British director Michael Winterbottom, who will host a special Screen Talks session on October 23.
Prices vary greatly between events; premiere screenings can be rather expensive, but plenty of cheaper showings will be available for other films. It is also worth noting that films are not shown exclusively on the south bank; many other cinemas throughout the capital participate in the Festival.
